LIMINAL accompanies Domingo Milella’s exhibition at Sotheby’s Grotto in Hong Kong and brings together images from a body of research that has led the artist back to the origins of art and symbolic thought. Since 2016, Milella has entered some of Europe’s most important Paleolithic caves, travelling through time and into the deepest chambers of the earth. Among signs, handprints, geometries, and animals traced by distant hands, the cave appears not as an archive of the past, but as a threshold: a place where time folds in upon itself and figures preserved in stone continue to speak from the depths of millennia, carrying fears and questions that remain our own. Milella’s photography inhabits this space of resonance between origin and future, archaeology and vision. His images do not simply document caves or fragments of memory. They ask what remains of the human gesture, and whether art can survive its makers, their civilizations, and their ruins: a message entrusted to the earth and sent toward a time still unknown.
